The history of the Department of Foreign Languages dates back to the time of the university-wide department of foreign languages of the Teacher’s Institute, which was later transformed into the Karaganda Pedagogical Institute, on the basis of which in February 1972 the second university in Kazakhstan was created, namely the Karaganda State University named after academician E.A. Buketov. The Department of Foreign Languages was one of the leading departments of the university, where many teachers began to work, who formed the teaching staff of the Faculty of Foreign Languages in 1998.
Due to the large staff in 2000, the department serving all the non-linguistic faculties of the university was divided into foreign languages departments of the humanities and natural faculties, which functioned separately for 10 years. Since 2010, the department acts again as a single unit of the faculty. For a long period of time, the department was led by associate professors Nurzhanova M.U. and Ayazbekova B.K., in recent years, the heads of the department were Ph.D. Akbaeva G.N. (Ramashova), doctor of PhD Gazikhanova Zh.G. (Shaikhyzada), Smagulova G.T., Pastushenko T.A., doctor PhD Shunkeeva S.A.
The main goal of its activity is the provision of quality educational services - teaching foreign languages at a high professional level, allowing students to use the acquired knowledge of the language for effective communication, both in the field of everyday communication and in the field of future professional activity.
In 2007 the department has successfully implemented a level model of teaching foreign languages in accordance with the Pan-European standard of language competencies level model of teaching foreign languages in all non-linguistic specialties of the university.
Since 2008 multilingual education has been successfully introduced at the faculties of the natural sciences, and the entire teaching staff is involved in the phased introduction of trilingual education in the framework of the implementation of the Nation's Plan “100 Steps” and GPRON for 2016-2019.
The teaching staff of the department pays great attention to the creation of a high-quality base of educational and methodological support, continues to develop educational and methodological complexes in the disciplines of the department, educational and educational publications, including on electronic media. These educational and teaching aids supplement the educational and methodological complexes of foreign publishers used in the educational process. February 28, 2020 an event planned under the plan of the branch of the foreign languages department was held. A master class on the topic “The effectiveness of inclusive education in Kazakhstan” was held as part of the startup project «Inclusive group center». The purpose of the event is to increase motivation and interest in learning English by discussing the problems of inclusive education in Kazakhstan. The event was conducted by the teacher of the Department of Foreign Languages Abdresheva M.K. and was attended by 1st year students of the faculty of pedagogy, specialty «Defectology» (Shora A., Rakhmadilda A., Isturganova M., Abdikarimova A., Umirzakov B.) and pupils of the 10th grade of the N. Nurmakov school (Aitzhanova A., Aubakirova B., Zhakisheva M., Zhanshoinov A., Igilik M.). During the master class, pupils and students actively discussed the topic of the master class, shared their ideas and worked actively and with enthusiasm. The teaching staff of the Department of Foreign Languages consists of experienced teachers, masters of science and young professionals who train students in foreign languages (English, German, French and Chinese) in non-linguistic specialties of the university.
The current direction in the activities of the department in recent years is participation in the implementation of the program of multilingual education, trilingual education of students of non-linguistic specialties. The staff of the department is convinced that the training of multilingual specialists who are fluent in Kazakh, Russian and foreign languages meets the modern requirements of our state and the international community.
To date, the department provides language training for students as part of a trilingual education program in 4 specialties.
The teaching staff of the department continues to actively work on the normative and educational-methodological support of multilingualism programs, which are of particular interest to colleagues from other universities.

Одним из направлений кафедры является привлечение студентов не языковых специальностей к участию в конференциях, олимпиадах различного уровня. Ежегодная университетская Неделя иностранных языков прошла в период с 19.11.18г. по 23.11.18г. В рамках Недели были проведены следующие мероприятия: олимпиада по иностранным языкам (английский, немецкий, французский языки) и языковой творческий конкурс «Linguа Star». Today, the teaching staff of the department are highly qualified specialists in foreign languages, constantly working to improve their methodological skills, participating in various continuing education courses, internships, including abroad.
In the 2019-2020 academic year, the faculty includes 30 full-time teachers, 24 of them are masters of science. 3 teachers of the department are trained in doctoral studies.
All teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages regularly undergo various forms of advanced training on topical issues of improving the methodology of teaching foreign languages at the present stage, a level model of teaching foreign languages, the development and use of multimedia and interactive tools in the educational process, etc
As part of the work of the branch of the Department of Foreign Languages on the basis of "GU Regional Specialized Boarding School for Gifted Children named after N. Nurmakov" 12/04/18 the intellectual game “What? Where? When? ”Purpose of the game: popularization of trilingual education in the academic environment. Objectives of the game: to contribute to the patriotic education of the younger generation; to develop competitiveness, the cult of knowledge as the main factors of individual success, proclaimed in the program "Rukhani zhagyru"; strengthen corporate cooperation between KSU named after E.A. Buketov and OSHOD them. N. Nurmakov; improve professional and linguistic skills in three target languages: Kazakh, Russian and English. Participants of the event: 2nd year students of the Faculty of Physics and Technology, teachers of KSU E.A. Buketov, teachers and students N. Nurmakov, students - trainees of the Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Novosibirsk (Russia). The game contained questions in three languages: Kazakh, Russian, English (B1). The winners of the game were the Einstein team of 6 KSU students, the opponents of which were a team of students of the OSHOD named after N. Nurmakov. The participants of the game were awarded with diplomas, and pupils and students were awarded with diplomas in the following nominations: for creative thinking, for their originality, for inexhaustible creative thought, encouraging the most interesting question.
From the 1st to the 5th of April, you were given an opportunity to visit a photo exhibition in framework of the contest "Tugan zher Zhastaldyn Kolynda", which was organized by foreign languages faculty. The competition was held to promote the program "Ruhani zhangyru" and devoted to year of youth in Kazakhstan. The competition was participated by students of non-linguistic specialties 1-3 courses. The competition was provided with new (not previously exhibited) photographs and video presentations of participants, where revealed the idea of their work in a foreign language (English, German, French, Chinese). In this video, the student talked about his work. On April 4, at 14.00, the winners of the competition were awarded:

The winners were awarded with diplomas, and master class of creative photography was organized for all the participants in the classroom №102 at university building №9. The master class was conducted by a well-known photographer in our city – Mikhail Baranov, the owner of his own photo school, a person with an active civil position. After this, guys were able to get valuable comments to their work or ask a piece of advice. Communication was creative and business at the same time.
